Concrete Patio Abilene TX - Patio Slabs & Extensions

A good patio in Abilene does three things. It drains away from the house, it stays level on clay that moves, and it's big enough to actually use on the spring and fall evenings that make West Texas worth the summers. Abilene Concrete Builders pours new patios, extends small builder-grade slabs, and builds the thicker pads that hot tubs and outdoor kitchens need.

Patio Projects We Pour

Round concrete patio built around a mesquite tree with a step down to the lawn, Abilene, TX

New Backyard Patios

We form the patio to fit the yard, not the other way around: curves around a tree, a step down to the lawn, or a straight run along the back of the house. Finishes include broom, smooth trowel, exposed aggregate and stamped, and a coat of concrete sealing helps any of them last. If you want a stone or brick look, our stamped concrete page shows the patterns.

Old patio with dowels drilled into its saw-cut edge and forms for a larger extension, Abilene, TX

Patio Extensions

Plenty of homes came with a patio the size of a parking space. We saw-cut a clean edge, drill and dowel steel into the old slab, and pour the extension to match the height and the slope, so the two pieces move together instead of drifting apart. A color match on old and new concrete is never perfect, and we'll tell you that up front.

Thick concrete slab under a stone grill island and a covered hot tub, Abilene, TX

Hot Tub and Outdoor Kitchen Slabs

Angi's patio guide puts slabs under hot tubs and outdoor kitchens at 6 to 8 inches, reinforced. A filled hot tub is a heavy, concentrated load, a bit like parking a small car in one spot and leaving it there. We thicken the slab under the tub or kitchen and leave conduit and plumbing sleeves where your electrician and plumber need them. If the patio wraps a pool, see our pool deck page.

Drainage Comes First

Water that runs toward the foundation is the most common patio mistake we see. On Taylor County clay it can feed the soil swelling under the house itself. We slope every patio away from the foundation, keep the top of the slab below the weep holes on brick homes, and put an isolation joint against the house so the patio can move without pushing on it.

Will a Patio Raise My Stormwater Fee?

Possibly, by a little. Abilene's stormwater utility fee, created by City Council in August 2003, is based on how much hard surface sits on your property, and the City counts roofs, asphalt, concrete, patios, sheds and barns. Residential rates are set in four tiers:

  • Up to 1,280 square feet: $3.12 a month.
  • 1,281 to 2,880 square feet: $4.16 a month.
  • 2,881 to 3,500 square feet: $4.94 a month.
  • Over 3,500 square feet: $5.98 a month.

For example, if your roof and drive already cover 2,700 square feet, a 300-square-foot patio would move you from the second tier to the third, a difference of 78 cents a month at the current rates. If your new slab is close to a tier line, we'll point it out when we measure.

Patio Covers Need Their Own Permit

The City lists patio covers among the projects that commonly need a building permit. If a cover is part of the plan, we pour the footings or thickened areas where the cover's posts will land, so you don't have to cut into a new slab later.

What a Concrete Patio Costs

Angi reports a 2026 national average of $3,557 for a concrete patio, with most people paying $1,919 to $5,393. Those are national figures. Your Abilene estimate lists demolition, base, steel, concrete and finish on separate lines.
