Hairline Shrinkage Cracks
Thin cracks that haven't moved apart or up and down are normal shrinkage. They're mostly cosmetic. We clean them out and seal them with a flexible sealant so water can't get under the slab.

Not every crack needs a jackhammer. Some need a bead of sealant, some need a patch, and some slabs are past saving. The hard part is telling which is which, and that's the first thing we do. Abilene Concrete Builders repairs cracked, chipped and worn concrete on driveways, walks, patios, garage floors and commercial sites, and replaces it when repair would only buy a year or two.

A crack you can fit a coin in, or one with one side higher than the other, means the ground under the slab has moved. On Taylor County clay, that usually traces back to water. If the slab is still in one piece, raising it may be the fix. See concrete leveling. If it has broken into several pieces, replacing that section is the honest answer.

Flaking tops, broken edges and chipped steps can often be patched or resurfaced if the slab underneath is sound. HomeGuide puts concrete resurfacing at $3 to $7 per square foot nationally, and resurfacing a two-car driveway at $1,200 to $2,900. Resurfacing only works on a stable slab, though. Putting an overlay on a slab that's still moving is like painting over a crack in drywall that keeps reopening.
We saw-cut a clean line at a joint so the new section doesn't leave a ragged edge, break out the old concrete, fix whatever went wrong underneath (usually the base or the drainage), and pour new concrete with steel and proper joints. HomeGuide lists old concrete removal at $2 to $6 per square foot nationally.
Haul-off is part of the job, and in Abilene it matters who does it. The City's Citizens Convenience Station doesn't accept construction waste, including concrete, brick and rock, and it says anyone paid to haul waste from a residential site is breaking state law by using it. Both landfills in the Abilene area are privately owned and operated. We load out the broken concrete and take it to a facility that accepts it, so it never sits in your yard.
Abilene's building code amendments make each permit holder responsible for containing construction debris on the property, and blowing trash or debris collecting outside the property line counts as a violation. We keep broken concrete and form lumber contained and leave the site broom-clean.
If the broken concrete is a public sidewalk or curb in front of your property, the City says repairing or replacing it is the owner's job, and you can't simply remove it. That work needs a right-of-way permit and bond, which we cover on our sidewalks and walkways page.
